Abstract
The role of vision machines and visual information in CIM systems is examined and the necessary features of a new generation of vision machines are considered. Wc introduce the concept of representing visual information in a multi-layer model and consider examples of the use of such a model in accomplishing systems integration. The model thus specified can be used to improve the modularity of vision functions and allow the definition of standard command and data structures for vision machines.
