Abstract

This paper describes the development of ACES (a CAPP expert system), an automatic process planning system for prismatic machined parts. ACES is written in Prolog and is currently implemented on IBM PC XT/AT compatible microcomputers. ACES is in fact a knowledge-based computer-aided process planning (CAPP) system. The system knowledge base is separated from the inference logic, and hence the process knowledge is opened for modification. The design module in the system allows users to specify part geometries in terms of machined surfaces. Machining processes and sequence will then be generated automatically by the automatic process selection and sequencing algorithms. Cutting parameters as well as the NC CLDATA can also be provided.
