Abstract
Recently, extensive efforts have been focused on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to problems associated with the design and control of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs). This paper surveys the key functional areas associated with FMS and discusses the application of AI techniques to their operation. The advantages of adopting knowledge-based approaches to the design and operational control of FMS are also discussed.
