Abstract
ASEAN countries have experienced phenomenal growth since the late 1980s. Sound economic policies backed by supportive regional cooperation have nurtured an environment for economic expansion. While recognizing the importance of globalism in contributing to trade and investment, ASEAN members have realized the importance of regional and subregional arrangements to complement national strategies. Regional economic cooperation has not always been up to expectation, but ASEAN's third decade is more promising. The emergence of the growth areas, linking territories across national boundaries, offer added avenues for sustaining and, in some instances, injecting vitality into the economic and political dynamism of the region. This paper provides an overview of the various subgroupings involving ASEAN as well as non‐ASEAN members to underscore the increasing interactions of political and economic cooperation.
