What we are called to do ‘when the unthinkable becomes the thinkable and the impossible really happens’*

Abstract

Writing this article has been challenging and frustrating, as each passing day brings new assaults against the fundamental values of a democratic society. The core values associated with responsible citizenship, ethical behavior, respect for self and others are virtually absent from the speech and actions of many of the individuals entrusted with protecting these values. In this article, I focus on two of the defining characteristics of American society – public, nonsectarian schools as the cornerstone of an informed and responsible citizenry, and immigrants as vital contributors to the strength and vitality of our country. Particular attention is given to the ways in which public schools and immigrants have been demonized by the political leadership in Washington, DC and portrayed as incompatible with the movement to ‘Make America Great Again.’ I conclude the article by reflecting on the implications of the current political climate for educators who advocate for social justice.
