Abstract
Until recently, teachers were trained in a sequence of observation, combined presentation and school practice. Much dissatisfaction has been expressed by students, tutors and inductee teachers with the ‘sitting with Nellie’ approach. Nellie is perhaps the best lathe operator in the factory, apprentices are placed next to her so that they might learn the job. Several factors have been cited which question the efficiency of this method, among them (Stones, E and Morris, S, (1972):
