Concept and Purpose of Visual Literacy

Pages 26-29 | Published online: 15 Apr 2008

Abstract

Visual literacy contains many things that are not new, many things that individuals all over the world have worked on for long times. But we think we are putting some of these things together i n new and different ways. I would like to start with a very simple definition of literacy and work from that into visual literacy. Webster's Collegiate Dictionary has as a definition for literacy ‘to be able to read and write.’ When you think about educational systems all over the world, you think that their goals include these kinds of basic skills — to be able to read and to write. I would say that the broad goal of education is to teach youngsters to create — to read and to write.
