The Rôle of Standards in Technological Progress

Abstract

The SMPTE is a sponsor of two American National Standards Committees: PH22 — Cinematography and C98 — Video Tape Recording. In practical terms, the SMPTE realises its sponsorship role by providing a Secretariat and other support services for the two committees. Additionally, the SMPTE maintains a number of its own Engineering Committees. Through this committee work, the SMPTE keeps constant vigilance over the preparation and updating of American National Standards for the benefit of the motion-picture and television industries which include manufacturers and users.
