Abstract
As early as in 1972 the FWU recommended the Philips VCR system (nowadays called Philips VCR standard) with the appropriate equipment for use in schools in the Federal Republic of Germany. At that time, the decision was fairly easy to make because price level, technical features and market position in Germany led to the conclusion that this system would meet educational needs as well as financial conditions. It served quite well for several years and the degree of standardisation reached in German schools even enabled central production and subsequent distribution of video tapes by A-V centres.
