Abstract
Canada may be described as both a developed and developing country. Most Canadians live in the developed part of the country which is almost totally contained in a relatively narrow corridor along its southern border. There are many urban centres in this region, with good transportation and communication links interconnecting them, and the residents enjoy high quality social services such as rapid access to tertiary care hospitals and a variety of educational opportunities offered by universities, colleges and schools. Satellites provide many of the east–west communication links in this southern corridor, but it is north of the corridor where the communications satellite plays a predominant role in economic development.
