Microelectronics for the Handicapped: A National Perspective

Pages 94-96 | Published online: 03 Aug 2006

Abstract

Since 1982, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has been seeking to create an awareness of information technology (IT) among people with special needs. The Department has encouraged disabled people to ask ‘What do I need?’ rather than ‘What is available?’ Whether in education, recreation, working or simply providing a vital tool for basic communication, IT can enrich the lives of those with special needs. There are now hundreds of different applications available ‐most of them based on microcomputers ‐ for people with very different disabilities.
