Abstract
Development support communication (DSC) has assumed an increasingly important role in many facets of improving rural Third World living standards. This article briefly traces the emergence of DSC, and outlines strategies currently being applied in the service of rural development. The discussion then focuses on group media applications, in particular the multiple uses of video, drawn mostly from the author's experience in or association with field projects of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). A capsule overview is also given of two prototype projects under way in Latin America. It is concluded that while access to the medium has increased dramatically as a result of technical refinements, guidelines emerging from successful applications of video‐based materials include clear planning of how, for whom, and to what purpose video will be used, carefully trained personnel, and a systematic methodology for its implementation.
