Types of Small Linguistic Communities and the Challenges They Face in the Field of Educational Media

Pages 162-168 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Abstract

Starting from the general concept of a language community, this article considers the characteristics of small linguistic communities. Since population size proves insufficient to define them, legal, political, socio‐economic and socio‐linguistic criteria are also evoked. The typology so developed brings to light some of the key internal and external problems and challenges faced by small‐language communities and their education systems in the production and use of appropriate educational media.
