Media and Equal Opportunities

Pages 53-57 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Abstract

The article considers the proposition that media are vehicles for equality of opportunity in education, and how this has sometimes been found to be the case. However there are strong arguments against this, and the article considers the ‘parallel school’, ie where students learn outside the school, and how this in its various forms can be harnessed to improve learning in the schools. The effect of social groupings on equality of opportunity via media is also considered.
