Decomposition of Changes in Input–Output Tables

Pages 41-54 | Published online: 28 Jul 2006

Abstract

The paper provides a method by which changes in input–output tables constructed for the same region at different points in time may be decomposed. The concern is with changes in the intermediate transaction flows. These changes are decomposed into five separately identifiable components. The method requires the knowledge of import matrices for the regional economy at both points in time. The decomposition is illustrated by a study of the Scottish economy, and some tentative inferences and implications are drawn.
