Platelet glycosomes

Pages 242-246 | Published online: 07 Jul 2009

Abstract

Most of the structural constituents of human platelets have been well characterized in ultrastructural studies over the past five decades. However, some structures occur rarely and have not been reported previously. The present article describes an organelle bounded by a unit membrane and filled with particles of glycogen. For that reason we have called this organelle the 'glycosome'. Similarities and differences between glycosomes, alpha-granules and tubular inclusions are discussed.
