Designing effective team-based performance measurement systems: an integrated approach

Pages 208-225 | Published online: 21 Feb 2007

Abstract

Measuring the performance of teams and, in particular, designing effective team-based performance measurement systems (TPMS) can be a difficult task. The purpose of this paper is to take the reader through the development and testing of a construct that provides an integrated approach to facilitate the design of TPMS. This construct was developed and tested based on a rigorous set of criteria adopted from constructive research theory as well as from existing performance measurement literature. The construct was tested in a series of workshops described in this paper. The data gathered during these workshops demonstrates the novelty and validity of the construct. The paper should be of interest to managers, team leaders and indeed anyone who is interested in monitoring and managing team performance. The paper will also be of interest to academics working in the fields of performance measurement and team management.

Acknowledgments

Kepa Mendibil is a Research Fellow within the Centre for Strategic Manufacturing at the University of Strathclyde. He received his PhD on Team Performance Management from the University of Strathclyde. Kepa is currently working on K-FLOW (www.kflow.org), an EU Fifth Framework project related to Knowledge Management in the Extended Enterprise. He is also involved in a business transformation and ERP implementation project within a major pump manufacturer in Scotland.

Jill MacBryde is the Deputy Director of the Centre for Strategic Manufacturing, Glasgow, Scotland. She is a Senior Lecturer and holds the post of Director of Teaching and Learning within the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management, at the University of Strathclyde. Jill's research focuses on process improvement and performance measurement. She is currently the principal investigator on a research project focusing on measuring and managing employee and team performance in business process environments. This work has been funded by the Economic and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Notes

†In the context of this research, an effective TPMS is considered to be a performance measurement system that enables the team to increase its contribution to the business and at the same time motivates and develops the team and its individuals.

†These perceptions were gathered via the Workshops feedback questionnaire.
