A categorized survey of the JIT literature

Abstract

The Just-In-Time production system is considered by many (o be a solution for Western manufacturers who desperately need to improve productivity. A great number of papers dealing with Just-In-Timc have been published in conference proceedings, technical journals and other periodicals. In this paper, an extensive survey of 266 Just-In-Time articles appearing in 38 major English journals is presented. A classification of the literature is proposed. An analysis of article characteristics and apparent trends in the literature is provided.

RAFAEL G. MORAS is an Assistant Professor of Engineering at St. Mary's University of San Antonio. He received a BSIE from Monterrey Institute of Technology (Mexico), an MSE and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining St. Mary's, he was a faculty member at Texas Tech University and at Monterrey Tech. He has conducted research in manufacturing, production engineering, and sequencing and scheduling. His consulting work includes the application of world-class manufacturing in industry. He has published several articles and presented numerous papers and seminars at technical conferences and symposia

MOHAMMAD REZA JALALI received a BS degree in textile technology and management, an MS in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis on industrial engineering and statistics, and a PhD from Texas Tech University. He is working on a post-doctoral appointment at the Department of Industrial Engineering at Texas Tech. His major research interest is the implementation of Justin-rime concepts in the Western production environment.

RICHARD A. DUDEK is a P.W. Horn Professor Emeritus of Industrial Engineering at Texas Tech Univeristy. He obtained his BSM E from the University of Nebraska, and his MSIE and PhD from the State University of Iowa, He has been at Texas Tech since 1958 and was Chairman of IE for many years. Prior experience includes appointments at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Nebraska, the State University of Iowa and several years in industry. He has been an active researcher in sequencing and scheduling, manufacturing productivity and technology assessment; and a consultant to industry. He is on two corporate boards. He has published numerous articles and delivered many papers and seminars at regional, national, and international meetings and institutions. He is on the editorial board of Engineering Costs and Production Economics.
