Revisiting the Mintzberg, Lawrence, and Lorsch theories about organisational structure, strategy, and environmental dynamism from the perspective of small firms

ABSTRACT

This study explores the association of organisational structure, strategic posture, level of differentiation, and integration with the external environment. The unit of analysis of this study is small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in stable and dynamic environments. The study findings showed that the external environment shapes organisational structure, strategy, and level of differentiation and integration. Additionally, the findings of the study revealed that small and medium-sized enterprises work on the same mechanism as large complex organisations.
