Parliament, select committees and democracy

Abstract

Holding Governments to account for their economic decisions is perhaps at once the most difficult and most important task that Parliament has to perform. The arguments are highly technical, the data difficult to understand, and most MPs ill‐equipped to cope with them. The new form of Select Committee introduced last year promised to help redress the balance between Parliament and the Executive. How far have they been successful and what is the next stage in their development?
