Abstract
The Treasury's ‘financial management initiative’ may have been inspired by a concern for value for money, but in practice it has become a corrupting influence on service delivery. To counter that influence, professionals need to state clearly what it is they are in business to do, and then argue on the basis of that for the resources to do it.
