Defence procurement and the defence industrial base

More than in other areas of government, changes in defence policy have implications for firms and jobs. So do changes in procurement policy. But these implications are rarely spelled out when defence issues are being debated in Parliament or on the hustings. How much do we know, for example, about the likely consequences of abandoning a buy‐British policy and opening up Defence procurement to competitive tendering? And what are the implications for our defence industrial base?
