Making managers in Britain: A progress report

A number of influential reports which appeared during the 1980s suggested that British managers were under‐trained and under‐developed compared with those of our competitors. The management charter initiative, with its commitment to the development of the all‐round general manager, was one result. However, professional career structures ‐ particularly in parts of the public sector ‐ suggest that it will take more than training programmes to improve our managers.
