On the privatization of British rail

The national railway company in the UK, British Rail, presents important issues for privatization. This article examines the rationale for privatizing BR, and the policy options proposed for privatization. The article explores these policy options and their accounting implications. It demonstrates that, while accounting information should not determine organizational forms in a newly privatized railway company, it may place important constraints on their effectiveness.
