Transport policy

Where next? Transport policy and problems in Britain

Pages 41-46 | Published online: 07 Jan 2009

Abstract

In this article Don Mathew examines the continuing tension between official policymakers and proponents of alternative transport solutions which are broader based, more accessible and more environmentally aware. In many areas there is mounting concern that the large road‐building programmes currently planned will exacerbate, rather than solve, existing traffic problems. Reactions to these programmes have converged to produce a ‘new realism’ in transport thinking.
