The abolition of the ILEA: Some implications for the restructuring of local government

Pages 57-60 | Published online: 07 Jan 2009

Abstract

On 1 April 1990, the Inner London Education Authority was abolished and its services were transferred to 12 inner London boroughs and the City of London. This article draws on original research to examine two questions: what have been the administrative and service consequences of abolition, and what do the lessons of inner London have to teach us today, in the light of the Review of Local Government and the debate about the future of Local Education Authorities?
