Abstract
This article describes a preliminary attempt to identify and explain variations in hospital discharge rates across the Health Boards in Scotland, with reference to demand side and supply side factors. These factors do not explain the variations in rates. An area for future research is to analyse the effect of clinicians’ behaviour and attitudes on hospital discharge rates.
