Fraud and corruption in the public sector

Changing public sector approaches to fraud

Pages 19-24 | Published online: 07 Jan 2009

Abstract

The rising volume and value of fraud may appear to be in contrast to the amount of police resources available to deal with it. In the public sector, however, several organizations have long taken on much of the responsibility for the detection, investigation and prosecution of fraud. As fraud increases, so other public sector organizations are accepting similar responsibilities but their approaches are being shaped by a number of criteria relating to functions, types of fraud and new techniques.
