The role of the visual control system in continual improvement is discussed. Visual control in the form of a chart ('master chart') which shows the running performance and pinpoints the directions for actions is a very useful tool in problem-solving and quality improvement. The use of the master chart has been studied in a few Indian industries to see if it can be used to achieve a breakthrough performance and as a tool for continual quality improvement. The results were very encouraging.
