Design Brief Expansion: Process Validation Issues

Pages 17-29 | Published online: 23 Mar 2007

Abstract

This paper is concerned with certain validation issues which have arisen from the development of a computerized support tool for the early stages of conceptual design. This tool is known as the design brief expansion system (DBE) and a detailed explanation of its functionality has been given in a companion paper. Here, the theory by which the success of a validation experiment may be assessed is outlined, along with the necessary experimental conditions for obtaining reliable results. The validation experiment itself is described in detail, as well as the results obtained. The conclusion is that DBE is shown to represent a valid and useful tool for the optimal expansion of engineering design briefs into full requirement specifications.
