Visions of Design

Pages 125-137 | Published online: 23 Mar 2007

SUMMARY

A dozen experienced engineers were interviewed to elicit their visions of engineering design as it might be carried out in the year 2020. This paper summarizes some of the principal visions, organized under the headings of ‘design process’, ‘Company structure’, ‘Qualitative models and simulation’, ‘Interaction’, ‘Data and information’, ‘Interpersonal communication’ and ‘Education’. Overall, visions of the availability and economics of computational power and communications bandwidth have led to a concentration upon the application of these and other technologies to the activity of design. The underlying theme of many of the visions was the provision of effective bridges between experts of different types, and between them and stored data and knowledge.
