Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIM: Allergy to camomile is an important problem, especially in Eastern European countries. Theaim of this study was to find out whether Anthecotulid-free extracts of Chamomilla recutita - Kamillosan® - has contact allergenic potential. METHODS: The study included 982 consecutive patients with contact dermatitis: 830 were tested with Kamillosan® solution prepared according to manufacturer's instructions and 152 patients were tested with both Kamillosan® cream and Kamillosan® ointment. RESULTS: Only one patient with very high exposure to camomile tested positive for the solution, while the tests in all the other patients were negative, including one patient who was highly sensitive to Anthemis cotula . In a patient with oral allergy syndrome and immediate hypersensitivity to many plants, including camomile, patch tests with Kamillosan® ointment and Kamillosan® cream, removed after 15 min and 48 h, were negative. CONCLUSION: These results strongly suggest that Kamillosan® could be a safe constituent of topical drugs and cosmetic products. ( J Dermatol Treat (2000) 11: 161-163)
