Pages 334-340 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

SUMMARY

Hereward College is the UK's national residential College for students with Physical and Sensory Disabilities. Research which was begun in 1987 has resulted in the implementation, by Office Workstations Ltd, of an integrated study environment suitable for all students including those who experience difficulty in using printed books.

The Nuffield Interactive Book System (NIBS) integrates a library of standard course textbooks with a full hypertext word processor. Students can use switches, keyboards or mouse interfaces to quickly locate relevant material using the browsing and navigational tools provided. Interesting material can be marked using an electronic equivalent of a highlight pen for later reference or automated inclusion in their notes.
