Flexible Authoring SystemsSUMMARY

Starting from the perspective that significant contradictions exist between currently available authoring tools and authoring needs with respect to the effectiveness and quality of products, the paper poses the concept of flexible authoring systems (FAS). Important dimensions of authoring flexibility that are likely to be possessed by such systems are discussed and related with the notion of hybrid authoring tools. Subsequently, the paper focuses on the introduction of a model‐based courseware generation system, MCOGEN, that could be seen as a pilot effort towards attaining flexible authoring systems. The model‐based instructional knowledge representation formalism underlying the design of MCOGEN is described, and the architecture of the system is presented.
