Further Investigations into the Protection of Aqueous Polymer Solutions by Colloidal Sulphur

&
Pages 383-389 | Received 24 Feb 1965, Published online: 03 Jul 2009

Summary

Low concentrations of colloidal sulphur can act as very efficient radiation-protecting agents in solutions of polymers and biological materials (enzymes). A large amonnt of protection is offered where an indirect effect operates; a much smaller amount of protection being offered against direct action.

An investigation was made into the nature of the protecting mechanisms using a labelled colloidal sulphur suspension and tritiated water to distinguish between true repair and stabilization repair reactions.
