Recovery of Chinese Hamster Cells from Ultra-violet Irradiation Damage

Summary

The results of this investigation indicate that a Chinese hamster cell-line (CHO) is capable of recovery from u.v. irradiation. Another Chinese hamster cell-line (B-14FAF28), which was found to be more sensitive to U.V.L., is not capable of recovery. A comparison of cells in G1 phase and S phase revealed that cells in S phase recover, whereas those in G1 phase do not. It appears, therefore, that recovery between fractionated doses of U.V.L. is dependent on cell-line and cell-age, which suggests that the recovery process is genetically controlled and qualitatively and quantitatively different from recovery following ionizing radiation.
