Summary

Equilibrium dialysis has been used to study the effects of 60Co γ-radiolysis on the carbohydrate binding sites of Con A. Reaction of eaq and OH· with Con A is accompanied by a decrease in the number of binding sites. Modification of the binding site by (Br) is independent of the initial concentration of Br. Reaction of (SCN) with the protein, however, is dependent on the initial SCN concentration. The results imply that tryptophan and possibly tyrosine are probably involved in the carbohydrate binding process.
