Anatomy of the Womb: Imag(in)ing Reproduction in the Discourse of Surgery

Pages 310-324 | Published online: 01 Dec 2006

Abstract

It may not be improper to remark that, Anatomy and Surgery, being sister arts, it is evident that any improvements in the one, must have been attended with some advantages to the other (Justamond 1789:52).

There is no branch of Surgery more open to improvement than that which relates to those accidents and diseases incident to the female sex, which admit of no relief except from the hand of the surgeon (Baker Brown Citation1854:Preface).
