1 The two endings of this novel being only a harbinger of how Wide Sargasso Sea might never have reached us at all, suspended as its release has been to two undictated sentences while its author was in hospital under serious threat; and of how the publication of Wide Sargasso Sea was itself key to the accidental rediscovery of her interwar work (Athill 2012: 402).
