Does consciousness lead to action? Exploring the impact of Perestroika and post‐Perestroika on women in Russia

Pages 47-54 | Published online: 28 Apr 2010

Abstract

In this article, the author treats the impact of the period since 1985 on Soviet/Russian women's consciousness about their place and status in society. The tumultuous forces of glasnost, reform, the end of the ancient regime and the birth pangs of a new regime have resulted in an amazing diversity of views among Russian women. Although consciousness has been raised and dissatisfaction with the heavy burdens women bear is discussed frequently, there has been little concerted effort to improve the situation for women. Grassroots movements are attempting to make changes, but their impact is limited. The prognosis is slow change without a clear direction.
