Influence of NaCl on Hydrogen Production from Glucose by Anaerobic Cultures

Abstract

In this study, batch experiments were conducted to investigate the inhibitory effects of NaCl on H₂ production from glucose by anaerobic mixed cultures. Experimental results demonstrate that NaCl concentration had significant inhibitory effects on glucose degradation, cumulative H₂ production, specific H₂ production rate, H₂ yield and the distribution of aqueous products. The specific H₂ production rate had a negative correlation with NaCl concentrations. The NaCl concentrations, at which the specific H₂ production rate and H₂ yield were reduced by 50%, were estimated as 209 mM and 443 mM, respectively.
