Abstract

Epifluorescence microscopy has been used to measure toxic effects using natural populations of bacteria in seawater. The procedure requires an 8 hours incubation after which samples are formol‐fixed for delayed microscopic determination of the “viable”; counts. The method relies on a more significant portion (15–20%) of the flora than with colony formation. Its sensivity to some mineral and organic pollutants is reported.
