Abstract

Water samples collected during routine biomonitoring of the upper Ganges river were analysed for coliform counts by the multiple tube (MPN) and membrane filter (MF) techniques. The data obtained were subject to statistical analysis. Consistently greater coliform counts were recorded using the MPN technique, although all the MF values produced fell within 95% of those obtained by the MPN method, with a linear co‐relation of +0.982. The effect of turbidity on the lower recovery by MF technique was observed.
