Abstract
In the estuaries called “rias”; of the N.W. of Spain, the corrosivity of the sea water has been tested using a low carbon steel as the test piece. The results show corrosion rates much higher than the ones found for the same area out to sea. The increase of the iron corrosion rate can be interpreted on the basis of the presence of pollutants like nitrate that can act as depolarizers of the cathodic reaction in the corrosion process.
