Abstract
The aim of this research work was to study a new biomass support medium and the performances of an anaerobic fluidised bed using this medium. The medium used is polyacrylamid gels. Its mains hydrodynamics characteristics are: a very low specific weight; a large fluidisation velocities range; the possibility of drying with a large reduction of weight due to the fact it is composed of more than 99 % of water. The fermentation results are very interesting and the good performances obtained during the study of unsteady state are probably due to the buffer effect of this medium towards acetate. The possibilities of drying colonised medium and the buffer effect towards acetate are, as far as we know, the only ones in this field.
