Naivety and Irony: Goethe’s Musical Needs

 

ABSTRACT

The inaugural Wilkinson-Willoughby Lecture of the English Goethe Society was given in January 2021 by the distinguished pianist Alfred Brendel. The text of his talk is given below.

Alfred Brendel

Alfred Brendel, concert career encompassing sixty years, Alfred Brendel emerged as one of the leading pianists, regularly appearing at the main concert halls in all major musical centers worldwide. He performed numerous cycles of Beethoven's sonatas and concertos, took a prominent role in establishing Schubert's Sonatas and Schoenberg's Concerto in the repertoire and in rekindling interest in Liszt's piano music. He received an honorary KBE and many prizes and honorary doctorates. He also gained a reputation as a writer: Music, Sense and Nonsense, Collected Essays and Lectures (Robson Press) appeared 2015. The Lady from Arezzo (Faber) was published in 2019.
