Pages 395-421 | Published online: 15 Apr 2011

Abstract

This study provides an insight into the influence of firm ownership and demographic variables of age, gender, education and job tenure on the work motivations and job attitudes of Russian retail workers at 13 retail firms in Moscow and St Petersburg/ Pushkin. This study surveyed 334 retail sales people employed in former state-owned, private and joint venture retail firms regarding reward valence, instrumentality, effortperformance expectations, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Demographic and firm ownership variables were a factor in workers' preference for rewards, effort performance expectations, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Practical implications and directions for future research are also discussed.
