Abstract

Existing theories of retail change are examined and discussed from an ecological perspective. A new theory is proposed, based on an open systems view, that modifies previous ecological approaches. This theory recognizes that, while the environment sets a limit on the feasible set of retail store types, actions of individual stores also play a major role in determining survival.
