Abstract
Hoare A. (1975) Foreign firms and air transport: the geographical effect of Heathrow Airport. Reg. Studies. 9, 349–367. This paper hypothesizes that the geography of foreign investment in the U.K. is partly related to the desire of overseas companies to be accessible to international airports. This is tested at two geographical scales: that of the U.K. as a whole and that of South-East England where foreign investment is proportionately most significant. General support for the hypothesis is found at both scales with, in particular, the need to be within a certain time-distance of Heathrow creating a noticeable clustering of foreign firms within the South-East. In conclusion, some practical implications of the findings are presented.
