Abstract
The basic objectives and unique problems associated with post-graduate education in this field are discussed. Difficulties in the recruitment and training of alcoholism specialists are outlined. Methods of continuing education are described, including the educational role of the Medical Society on Alcohol and Alcoholism, the publication of a handbook on Alcoholism for Medical Practitioners, the development of an experimential ‘live-in’ alcoholism unit attachment, and experience with the organization of workshops on the practical management of alcohol problems in clinical practice. Ways of influencing the unconverted are discussed.
